We are proud to celebrate farmers markets and what they mean to us as consumers, as members of a community and broader foodshed*. Farmers markets afford customers access to fresh, local food, while giving farmers an important opportunity for direct marketing** which helps those who work hardest to put food on our table to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Farmers markets are cultural centers, and in the time of COVID-19, they provided a crucial source of food security amidst disrupted commodity networks in a well ventilated outdoor venue for safe shopping. *A foodshed refers to the geographical area of land and water resources that supply a regional food system. A foodshed includes the nutrients, animals, plants, institutions, transportation networks, economy, and cultures that feed a population.
**According to the USDA Economic Research Service, out of every dollar spent on food, only 14.6 cents went to farmers. |
